Research Paper

William Buehler Mr. Neuburger Eng.101-104 April 8, 2013 Research Paper Death Camps The Holocaust is a grim reminder of what evil people can do to each other. They murdered millions of people, many of them were Jews. Others included Jehovah’s Witness, homosexuals, midgets, and political prisoners. One of the most gruesome things of the Holocaust was the death camps. There were six death camps in total. The Holocaust remains one of the worst genocides in the twentieth century. One of the most notorious death camps that the Nazi’s had was Auschwitz-Birkenau according to jewishgen.com it was known as the Death Factory. There were also two other camps in the Auschwitz complex as well as many subs camps. There were seven gas chambers that used Zyklon-B poison gas to murder people. They had three Crematoriums running just about nonstop cremating bodies. (www.ushmm.org). From, my personal visit to Auschwitz the place just seemed completely evil. I saw the sign that said “work will make you free” this gave me a terrible feeling because I knew many people never left this gate alive. I couldn’t bring myself to go through. I had just gotten a terrible feeling and my head started to hurt has I walked up to the gate of Aushwitz. One of the other horrific Nazi death camps was Chełmno and it was established in December 7th, 1941. It was set up in the town of Chelmno, about 50 miles away from Lodz which had a ghetto setup in it. The camp was very primitive they used the church in town to hold the people being sent to the gas chambers. The Nazis used three gas vans to carry out these brutal murders. The Nazis red directed the vans exhaust was redirected up in the van so that they would die of carbon monoxide. They were also lined with tin and air tight. They had wooden lattice on the floor so, that clean up would be quicker. The camp murdered around 150,000 people in all there are only 2 known survivors of the camp. (http://www.jewishgen.org) I never got to see Chelmno but my uncle a world traveler got to meet one of the survivors in Poland, while he was visiting the camp. The survivor was talking about his experience at the camp. He also talked about the process that the Nazis murdered the people at Chelmno. First they would put around fifty people in one of the Nazi gas vans and drive it to a hole that prisoners had been digging. Once the prisoners got to the large hole the dead bodies would be thrown in and filled in with a bulldozer. Sometimes the prisoners would even be alive when buried. These two camps are just two of the horrific camps that were run during the holocaust. There were many brutal murders that happened everywhere in Europe and they need to be remembered so, history won’t repeat itself. Never forget what happened during the holocaust. This weekend I went to Hot Springs Arkansas to visit family and celebrate Easter. We also ended up going to the horse track this wasn't a surprise considering my families gambling problems. I decided to only use 20 dollars the gamble with so I wouldn't waste too much money. I won two of the 10 races winning a total of 35 dollars. I ended up losing 5 dollars in the long run.

Fishing Trip

As I walked slowly to the boat the air was crisp and salty. As I boarded the boat, I was followed by my dad and my crazy uncle that was already  drunk at ten in the morning. As soon as I had gotten on the boat it smelled like rotting fish. I saw a one of the deckhands cutting up squid very fast I felt very excited for some reason like it was my first time ever fishing. There were several people other people slowly boarding the boat, a few minutes later the captain got on the load speaker and said “All aboard.” Then I head the Diesel engines fire up. It sounded very loud like jet engine.
There were many people abort the old salty boat. A family of four was there they were very nice people all with blonde hair and blue eyes. There was also a couple a man and women, the man had black greasy mullet and his wife was a rather large lady that was smoking like a chimney. Most of the people on the other side of the boats cabin were drunk college kids that were very disorderly. We all set on a bench by the couple the lady was puffing on cigarettes like crazy it was one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. The mullet guy was sitting on the boats bench sleeping loudly as the boat was rocking back and forth. There was a deck hand with really dark tan skin from the sun and being on the boat all year. He slowly opened up can can of Spam. Then, he pulled out his filet knife and began to cut the spam. He would cut it then the meat then gently get it on his knife and eat it off the dirty blade. It honestly looked like an accident ready to happen considering that most fillet knifes are razor sharp or sharper.

The deck hand quickly went from eating to getting the fishing poles ready like in a instant. He then yelled to everyone to come inside and talk to the captain. Everyone went inside the boats cabin very quickly to get out of the heat. As everyone squeezed in the boat's cabin it was still cooler, than the deck most likely because of air conditioning. The captain came in he was a old man wearing a hat also very tan from the sun. The first words he said were “Would anyone like to like to put five dollars in a pot for the biggest fish caught?” Just about everyone but the kids put five dollars in the pot. After that everyone but the captain when outside and quickly grabbed a grimy old fishing pole. As I looked over my fishing pole I noticed that it was covered in blood most like likely from a shark or just cleaning fish. I walked up to the spot I would be fishing near the front of the boat. I look down to find a giant bucket of bait it looked like squid and other random fish. I gently grabbed a piece of smell squid and placed it on a razor sharp hook. Finally, I cast out and the vigorous waiting began.
Soon after I cast my line I felt a nibble'. I set the hook quicker than a second. I began to reel it up, I reeled up for a few seconds but it felt like forever. After I reeled it up to the top there was a red fish with sharp looking fins on it and jagged teeth. The deckhand came over and told me it was a red snapper also that they were good eating. Then I put it in a basket of ice for later so hopefully, I would have a good dinner. As I looked over at my uncle was struggling with a fish he had on but he finally got it up and it was a octopus. Suddenly it shot ink all over the rail. The deckhand cut the line it just went back into the water and swam off like a bat out of hell.
I caught several more fish my small ice bucket was looking very full. Then all of the sudden I saw a fin in the water it was a dolphin jumping out of the water. A few minutes later I noticed another fin coming out of the water, but this fish wasn't jumping.  Then it came  near were to the boat suddenly. It turned out to be a 3 foot lemon shark and very shocking sight. The captain must have saw it because he came over the boats loud speaker and said, “There will be no sharks on this boat.”

Immediately after the captain came on, my dad said “I'm going to catch the shark.” Swiftly my dad baited his hook and threw that bait right in front of the shark. Soon after that the shark violently grabbed the bait and the reel started to struggle and make a lot on noise. My dad then began to crank the reel quickly. He had gotten the shark almost to the boat went the fun police showed up aka the captain  and he cut the line. This was very disappointing considering my dad had always wanted to catch a shark. This was quite the disappoint to my uncle because he was still drinking and could hardly stand up.
Following the shark insistent the smoking lady stated to scream and her fishing pole was just about straight down. Then her husband and a deck hand came over to help the mad women. I when back to fishing then after about five minutes she got the fish in. It was a 40 pound brown grouper fish it didn't look happy at all and it was thrashing all over the deck violently.
We all put our fish in the giant cooler in the back of the boat and headed back to the dock. My dad, uncle, and I all set down on the boats beat up bench till we got back. After we got back the smoking lady got her pot money for the biggest fish. I felt up set about not getting the biggest fish but that changed really quick. This mainly because my awesome mom and brother showed up to congratulate use on actually catching fish for once. Immediately, after that the deck hands had filleted our fish and we all went back to our condo.
